Violence and Large Crowds Pose Challenge for Miami Beach During Spring Break

Miami Beach is experiencing violence during spring break for the third consecutive year, despite a substantial police presence and activities designed to provide alternatives to consuming alcohol and roaming the streets. The city has imposed a curfew and is reportedly not considering another one for next weekend.

Early Sunday morning, police responded to a fatal shooting on Ocean Drive, in South Beach. A man was shot and later died at a hospital, and officers apprehended a suspect. This follows another shooting on Friday night that left one person dead and another seriously injured.

Mayor Dan Gelber said in a video statement that the “unruly nature of too many and the presence of guns has created a peril that cannot go unchecked.” Police have reported 322 arrests and confiscated over 70 firearms since February 27th.

To try and curb the violence, the city has banned alcohol sales at larger clubs after 2 a.m. and offered activities such as art, music, yoga, and volleyball tournaments. Police are also stationed in towers that give them a bird’s-eye view of the streets.

Gelber said, “We don’t ask for spring break in our city. We don’t want spring break in our city.” Business owners, too, have expressed the need for more drastic measures. Mitch Novick, co-owner of the Sherbrooke All Suites Hotel, said, “They need to shut it all off.”

The overnight curfew, which ended Monday morning, excluded residents, people going to and from work, emergency services, and hotel guests. Restaurants can remain open for delivery only, and arriving guests may have to provide proof of their reservations.

In the past two years, the city has seen over 1,000 arrests and dozens of firearms confiscated due to rowdy spring break activities.
