Ukraine’s air defense units are on high alert in the face of Russian air raids on the country. It has become a routine for the Ukrainian defenders to spring into action, deploying for interceptive measures on farm fields around Kyiv. Ukrainian defenders have shot down every Russian drone and missile launched at Kiev since April 28.
In order to counter Russia’s attempts to acquire air superiority, the Ukrainian air defense has been fortified during the previous 14 months with Western weapons and experience. Defense upgrades have influenced the conflict by saving lives and property.
Seven missiles and eleven drones have flown by since April 28. Kyiv was spared. Last week, Ukraine intercepted Russia’s most cutting-edge hypersonic missile.
Russia launched the initial assault on Ukraine’s ground-based air defenses. On day three of the war, enough mobile units had been resupplied to fire down several aircraft. Russia’s offensive jets were grounded, costing them a decisive advantage.
The brigade commander of air defense command “Center” reports that his brigade took out barracks and command posts and killed people on the first day of the war with 20 Russian missiles. They are now mobile teams that employ the “shoot and scoot” strategy.
Ukraine has gradually added new systems from Western allies, including IRIS-T batteries from Germany, American and Norwegian-built NASAMS, European-built SAMP/T systems, American-built HAWK missiles, and two U.S.-built Patriot batteries. Despite recent successes in thwarting assaults, Kyiv has been harmed and destroyed by falling rockets and drones. The president of Ukraine has been granted his request for air-defense supplies from friendly countries. It’s possible Moscow is hoping Western support will wane, putting pressure on Ukraine to give in.
