Since Texas Governor Greg Abbott promised to bring the border problem to President Joe Biden’s doorstep a month ago, his state has dispatched 32 buses full of migrants to the nation’s capital, with no intentions to stop. According to a representative for the governor’s office, the state’s initiative to transport migrants to Washington, has resulted in 835 individuals being dropped off since the first bus arrived on April 13.

The Washington Examiner reports that the 32 buses have transported an average of 26 migrants each bus, despite being able to accommodate up to 40 people. The buses are subsidized by the government and are free to migrants. They help relieve the transportation load on Texas municipalities and charitable groups, which are already overburdened by the daily influx of thousands of migrants.

As the number of migrants unlawfully crossing the border from Mexico climbed to some of the highest levels ever observed in March, Abbott, who is seeking a third term in November, said on April 6 that the state will employ emergency evacuation measures to “take the border to President Biden.” The state enlisted private charter bus companies and security to accompany the buses on the trips.

Despite Abbott’s claims that the operation would show Washington what border communities like Eagle Pass and McAllen are up against, the operation has received little attention in Washington. Migrants who are dropped off by buses usually walk to Union Station, where they may board trains or long-distance buses to places where they have family or friends.

Former Homeland Security official and senior fellow for the conservative Center for Renewing America Ken Cuccinelli slammed the busing operation, saying, “Busing illegals to D.C. is nice showmanship, but nothing here will change the illegal flow into Texas. Ironically enough, Abbott’s going to slow the legal flow with more burdensome inspections. Looking forward to next week for the ‘unprecedented’ part of the announcement.”
