Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas Hospitalized with unknown illness

The Supreme Court said in a statement that Justice Clarence Thomas had been admitted to the hospital with an illness.

According to Supreme Court spokesman Patricia McCabe, Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., on Friday evening after experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Following tests, he was diagnosed with an infection and is being treated with intravenous antibiotics, said McCabe. She didn’t go into any further information about the infection.

She explained, “His symptoms are abating, he is resting comfortably, and he expects to be released from the hospital in a day or two. Justice Thomas will participate in the consideration and discussion of any cases for which he is not present on the basis of the briefs, transcripts and audio of the oral arguments.”

At the age of 73, Thomas is the most senior conservative justice and second-oldest after Justice Stephen Breyer.

Thomas has no known health difficulties and has been an active participant in Court proceedings for the previous two years. According to the Court, he has been vaccinated and boosted for COVID-19, as have the other eight justices.

The Supreme Court will reconvene at 10 a.m. on Monday for two weeks of oral arguments. Thomas will not be participating in the arguments remotely, according to McCabe’s statement, but will still vote in the cases.
