The Golden State Warriors breathed new life into their Western Conference semifinals series against the Los Angeles Lakers by defeating them 121-106 in Game 5 on Wednesday night. The reigning champions had to stave off elimination, but they delivered a strong performance in what was a must-win game.
To complement Stephen Curry’s 27 points and eight dimes, Andrew Wiggins added 25 points, seven boards, and five helpers. Draymond Green contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds, and his tenacity on defense helped Golden State to a win.
The Warriors’ defensive energy was impressive, and it allowed them to create better chances on the offensive end. They will need to bring this same level of focus and urgency when they travel to Los Angeles for Game 6 on Friday, although the status of Lakers star Anthony Davis is unknown following a head injury in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s game.
Davis suffered the injury as he vied for a rebound with Kevon Looney, and he had to be helped off the court in a wheelchair. While Lakers coach Darivn Ham did not provide details on the evaluation Davis went through, he did note that the big man appeared to be doing well.
Despite the defeat, LeBron James and Davis had solid performances for the Lakers, scoring 25 and 23 points, respectively. However, James will need more support from his teammates to close out the series in Game 6.
The Warriors have experience in rallying from a 3-1 series deficit in the past. They accomplished the feat in the Western Conference finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2016. Golden State will look to win Game 6 to force a Game 7 at home on Sunday.
In terms of the lineup, Golden State stuck with their five-combination lineup, which included Gary Payton II, who provided 13 points and six rebounds. Jordan Poole also made an impact off the bench, hitting his first 3-pointer since Game 1.
Klay Thompson struggled once again, going 3-11 and finishing with only 10 points. Going into Game 6 in Los Angeles, Thompson has a chance to redeem himself and add to his impressive Game 6 performances.
The Lakers have won all five of their playoff home games so far and have won eight in a row overall. However, the Warriors have shown that they can rally when their backs are against the wall, and this series is far from over.
