A mother from South Carolina was arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder after she allegedly drowned her six-year-old daughter in the family’s bathtub. Jamie Bradley Brun, 37, began killing her daughter, then eight years old, until her older daughter awoke screaming and stopped her. On Friday morning, their home was invaded on the island of St. Helena. The Beaufort County sheriff, PJ Tanner, said Brun cooperated with detectives and called the act “heinous,” but he did not offer any speculation about the man’s motivation. Due to a lack of information, Brun remained in jail without bail.

The 16-year-old daughter of Brun was asleep when she was woken by her sister’s screams at 1:30 am on Friday. Although the sheriff did not explain how the mother was trying to drown her child, he said that the screams were coming from the bathroom. Brun’s elder daughter entered the bathroom and managed to rescue her sister and took the child to a nearby family member’s house to call 911. Tanner praised the 16-year-old for her brave actions, stating that her courage was amazing.
The child was taken to the hospital and CPR was attempted eight minutes later, but he was pronounced dead. After Brun made a grab for a deputy’s gun, she was Tasered and taken into custody. Tanner stated that Brun did not have any documented history of mental illness, and the eight-year-old does not appear to be in critical condition.
An employee at the school called the police two years ago out of concern for one of the students, even though there was no immediate danger. The sheriff stated that there was more information available about the incident, but it could not share it. The 8-year-old and her 16-year-old sister are currently being looked after by other family members.
