In a recent interview, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said that President Biden is losing support among progressive and younger party supporters. The second-term congresswoman from New York, representing Queens and the Bronx in Washington, made the comments during an interview with New York 1 host Errol Louis. She highlighted Biden’s electoral challenges as the potentially power-shifting midterm elections approach.

Ocasio-Cortez, a self-identified Democratic Socialist told Louis, “We need to acknowledge that this isn’t just about middle of the road, increasingly narrow band of independent voters. But, this is really about the collapse of support among young people, among Democratic base, feeling like they worked overtime to get this president elected and they aren’t necessarily being seen.” Additionally, she claimed, “It is Biden’s power and ability to cancel student debt, and nobody else’s.”

Her comments came as part of a larger conversation on Biden’s poor polling ratings and how she thinks Democrats might avoid a thrashing in November’s elections, which the party in power usually suffers.

Ocasio-Cortez and her fellow “Squad” members believe Biden has the power to wipe out $10,000 from every college student’s debt by executive action, removing any prospect of more conservative Democrats or Republicans blocking it in Congress. While he was campaigning, Biden promised to eliminate at least $10,000 in student debt for every borrower and progressives see fulfilling this promise as a way to win back younger voters before the midterms.
