Pennsylvania House Set to Vote on Package of Gun Bills: What You Need to Know

The Pennsylvania state House of Representatives started its debate on a measure for gun control on Monday, marking the first time in years the issue has reached the floor amid a politically divided government. The Democrats are using their narrow one-vote majority in the House to push through several bills, which they claim to be relatively moderate ways to tackle gun trafficking, suicide deaths, accidental shootings, and day-to-day violence. However, Republicans have criticized the proposals.

The House committee approved four bills, including one that mandates long-barreled firearms with trigger locks during sales. Another bill stipulates that gun owners must report lost or stolen firearms to police within three days, with repeat offenders risking a misdemeanor charge. The third bill seeks to expand background checks on firearms buyers and eliminate the “gun show” loophole for the private sales of semi-automatic rifles, sporting rifles, and shotguns. Meanwhile, a “red flag” bill in the fourth proposal would allow a judge to temporarily confiscate firearms from someone if family members or the police make a request. According to anti-gun violence group Everytown for Gun Safety, 19 states have similar laws.

The legislation faces a hurdle in the Republican-controlled Senate, historically more determined to protect gun rights, even as it works with Democrats to boost funding for mental health and anti-violence schemes. The introduction of these measures takes place when the US is experiencing a record number of mass killings in 2023. Gun violence played a significant role in the campaign for mayor in Philadelphia, and the city seeks permission from the state’s highest court to impose its gun control policies.

The Pennsylvania Legislature, previously under Republican control, has not seriously considered augmenting gun control measures since 2018. However, this session, debate surrounding gun violence began with hearing in March, with the House now focusing on passing gun control bills with their currently held majority.
