New York Governor Kathy Hochul claims that President Biden has ignored her numerous requests for help with the escalating “humanitarian crisis” brought on by the influx of migrants into New York City. While she has avoided acknowledging the possibility that Biden’s open-border immigration policies are to blame, she stated, “We want the federal government to see that this is a humanitarian crisis.”

The New York Post reports the arrival of 18,600 “asylum seekers” in New York City in recent months has resulted in “overwhelmed” schools throughout the five boroughs, where Mayor Eric Adams has declared an emergency. Adams said “every community” should expect migrants as city homeless shelters reached capacity. The migrants, claiming asylum are allowed to stay in the U.S. legally while their cases are decided. Many are fleeing social unrest and economic ruin in nations like Venezuela. 

Many of the migrants were sent to the city by Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott, the Biden administration, and charitable organizations. Thousands more were sent with Mayor Adams’ approval by the Democratic El Paso Mayor Oscar Leeser. While the federal government has paid back a small amount to the city to cover the cost of housing migrants, Adams claims the city still requires about $1 billion more in light of budget projections that show multi-billion dollar deficits in the coming years. 

Hochul claimed that she is working “hand-in-hand” with the mayor to convince Biden to use more federal resources to address the situation while also pressuring Congress to better control future immigration into the country. She explained she has been “Speaking to the Chief of Staff [Ron Klain], speaking to the president, speaking to the chief of staff again, speaking to the president again – with Eric Adams – without Eric Adams.” Still, the White House continues to ignore the cries from the state Capitol and the mayor’s office.
