President Joe Biden welcomed the NBA champion Golden State Warriors to the White House on Tuesday, celebrating their victory while also expressing concern for Californians affected by destructive weather. Biden recently approved disaster assistance for the state and is visiting this week.
The Warriors were disinvited to the White House while Donald Trump was president, but Biden said they are always welcome. The Warriors beat the Celtics in a six-game championship series last year, making a remarkable come-back after a difficult stretch due to key player injuries.
The team presented Biden and Harris with custom jerseys. Stephen Curry and Warriors head coach Steve Kerr also attended a roundtable on gun violence with White House officials where they discussed its impact on communities and young people specifically.
While the Warriors’ championship was celebrated, the president and vice president also used the occasion to discuss the importance of helping those affected by natural disasters, which have devastated California this winter.
