Arkansas Senate OKs gender bathroom bill

On Tuesday, the Arkansas Legislature gave its first approval to a bill that would make it illegal for men to use women’s bathrooms when there are children around, and the same would be true for women. The bill reportedly goes further than a bathroom law that was passed in North Carolina in 2016 and then changed.

This bill makes an exception for parents and guardians who are attending alongside children under 7 years old.

Gender-confused people would be breaking the law if they used public restrooms that didn’t match the sex on their birth certificate, according to the proposed law. It would also let private businesses limit who can use the bathroom based on gender.

Civil rights groups such as the Arkansas chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union have criticized the proposal, arguing the bill is unfair to so-called ‘transgender’ people and would make the community even more isolated. Republican Rep. Bob Ballinger, who wrote the bill, said that it would protect privacy and keep everyone safe.
