On Tuesday, China threatened the U.S. following its downing of a suspected Chinese spy balloon off the American East Coast. The U.S. has sanctioned six Chinese entities that it said are linked to Beijing’s aerospace programs, and the House of Representatives unanimously voted to condemn China for its actions.
China denies the balloon was a military asset, and has expressed regret over the balloon’s entry into U.S. airspace while concurrently threatening to retaliate.
This incident is not isolated to the U.S. alone; the Japanese Defense Ministry has said at least three flying objects were spotted in its airspace since 2019, which it strongly believed to have been Chinese spy balloons. This has raised concerns in Japan over possible Chinese espionage activities.
While the U.S. and Japan have taken action against China, the Chinese government has yet to officially comment on the incident. Meanwhile, the U.S. is expected to continue its sanctions against the Chinese entities it has accused of being involved in the incident.
The incident has raised concerns about what other measures China may take against the U.S. and its allies.
