Ohio House Speaker Unveils Priority Bills Focused on Tax Cuts, Education, and Parental Rights

Ohio House Speaker Jason Stephens has unveiled a list of priority bills for the new legislative session, with a focus on tax cuts, education and the rights of parents.

The list includes bills to reduce Ohio’s income tax rate, ban boys from participating in girl’s sports, and give parents more control over the education of their children. Also included in the list is a universal school voucher bill and a proposed ballot measure to make it more difficult to amend the Ohio Constitution.

These proposed bills face a divided House Republican caucus, with neither faction having the needed 50 votes to pass legislation without help from the other or from Democrats. Democrats have signaled their interest in bipartisanship, but have expressed opposition to the transgender sports ban and the backpack bill.

The proposed bills will have to be negotiated among the various factions in the House, and Speaker Stephens is hoping to find common ground on issues such as tax cuts and education. The bills will have to pass both the House and the Senate before they can become law.

The list of bills represents the Republican agenda for the new legislative session, but it remains to be seen if the Republican majority in the House can come together to pass the legislation.
