Elon Musk’s Tweet Takes Center Stage as Federal Judge Rejects Bid to Delay Trial

On Friday, a federal judge rejected a bid from tech billionaire Elon Musk to move or delay a trial over a misleading tweet about a potential Tesla buyout. Jury selection for the trial is scheduled for Tuesday.

The case is centered around a tweet from Musk in 2018 in which he wrote, “Am considering taking Tesla private at $420. Funding secured.” The tweet sent Tesla’s stock skyrocketing, and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) sued him for fraud, alleging that he had not, in fact, secured any funding.

Musk’s lawyers had argued that the media coverage of the case had poisoned the jury pool in the San Francisco Bay Area. They wanted the judge to move the trial to a different location or delay the trial until the media coverage had died down.

However, the judge determined that the tweet from Musk was false and misleading, and that it will be up to the jury to decide whether he acted recklessly. The judge also noted that the case has received “substantially less media coverage than the parties expected” and that “the pool of prospective jurors is not so biased that a fair and impartial jury cannot be selected.”

Regardless of the trial’s outcome, it is worth noting that Tesla’s stock price has skyrocketed since Musk’s tweet. After adjusting for two stock splits, Tesla’s shares are now worth nearly six times more than at the time of Musk’s tweets. This is a testament to the power of Musk’s influence and the strength of Tesla’s brand.

The trial is set to begin on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see how the jury ultimately rules in this case and what impact it could have on Musk, Tesla, and the world of tech.
