Turkish President Steps Up to Mediate Between Russia and Ukraine

Thursday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan talked to both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to try to stop the fighting between Russia and Ukraine.

Ever since the Russia-Ukraine war started, Turkey has aimed to act as a mediator between the two countries.

Erdogan said again that Turkey is ready to act as a mediator between Moscow and Kiev. He also said that he supports a unilateral ceasefire and a fair solution. The leader of Turkey has said in the past that he wants to find a peaceful solution and is willing to help the two countries open diplomatic channels of communication.

Along with these subjects, Putin and Erdogan also spoke about bilateral trade, energy cooperation, and the tumultuous situation in Syria.

The phone conversations come at a time when tensions between Russia and Ukraine have been escalating. A lot of people have died in the war in eastern Ukraine, and relations between the U.S. and Ukraine have become very tense.

Turkey’s role as a mediator could be beneficial for both Russia and Ukraine. Ankara has previously played a key role in ending conflicts in the Middle East, and its involvement in the Russia-Ukraine dispute could help to bring the two sides closer together.

Even though it’s not clear if Erdogan’s efforts will work, his phone calls with both Putin and Zelensky show how serious he is about finding a peaceful way to end the conflict. It remains to be seen whether the two sides will be able to reach an agreement, but Turkey’s involvement could go a long way toward resolving the dispute.
