Ime Udoka will likely be the Brooklyn Nets’ new coach. The New York Post reports that after a terrible 2-5 start, the Nets dismissed Steve Nash on Tuesday. Jacque Vaughn is serving as the team’s temporary head coach. The Nets intend to bring Udoka in to replace Nash, according to reports from Shams Charania of The Athletic and Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
After it was discovered during an investigation that Udoka had an affair with a female subordinate, the Celtics suspended him for at least a year. Udoka made “unwanted comments” to the woman, according to Charania’s account in The Athletic, and Wojnarowski claimed the coach used “crude language.”
Wojnarowski stated on Tuesday that the Celtics would let Udoka leave for a different position. According to Yahoo Sports, the Celtics would not seek compensation for the coach who had been marred by scandal.
Boston reached the NBA Finals last year in Udoka’s first season as the Celtics’ head coach; two years ago, he was an assistant with the Nets. Stephen A. Smith said in October on ESPN’s “First Take” that the Celtics likely suspended Udoka rather than fire him because they were concerned he would become the head coach of the rival Nets.
