House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) husband Paul was charged on Thursday concerning an automobile accident that occurred in California last month. According to the Napa County District Attorney’s Office, the 82-year-old was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, and driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.08%. The DA’s office stated, “Based upon the extent of the injuries suffered by the victim, the District Attorney filed misdemeanor charges. This decision is consistent with how our office handles these cases with similar injuries.”
The New York Times reported that on May 28, around 10 p.m. local time, Paul Pelosi was crossing the highway in his 2021 Porsche 911 as he headed for a Pelosi country home in Napa Valley when a Jeep crashed into his car. Records reveal that the speaker’s husband was booked at the Napa County jail on charges of DUI with a BAC of 0.08% or higher and released several hours later after posting $5,000 bail. The county district attorney’s office said that he is scheduled to appear in Napa County Superior Court on August 3 at 8:30 a.m. PST. On June 13, a mugshot was made public.
Additionally, the DA’s office noted that “The punishment for driving under the influence causing injury as a misdemeanor is set by California law. It includes up to five years of probation, a minimum of five days in jail, installation of an ignition interlock device, fines and fees, completion of a court ordered drinking driver class, and other terms as appropriate.”
According to the New York Times, Paul Pelosi had cataract surgery the day before the incident and had gone to dinner the previous evening with a friend and Democratic supporter named Alexander Mehran. CBS reported that a representative for Paul Pelosi claimed he was driving by himself and was “fully cooperative” with law enforcement. However, a Nancy Pelosi representative refused to comment on the allegations, stating, “We are declining comment at this time.”
Nancy Pelosi was reportedly on the East coast at the time of the accident. On May 29, the speaker received an honorary degree from Brown University in Rhode Island after giving a lecture there. She and Paul have been together since 1963, and they have five kids. Paul is the owner of San Francisco-based investment company Financial Leasing Services.
